An affecting blow-by-blow account of protestors under siege returns documentary filmmaking to its urgent, political roots.

On 17 November 2019, the police laid siege to protestors at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in a blockade lasting nearly two weeks. Beleaguered students fought teargas with makeshift whiteboard shields, hoping to escape and return home to safety.

For fear of state persecution and true to the leaderless politics of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement that began in 2019, Inside the Red Brick Wall is directed by an anonymous collective known as the Hong Kong Documentary Filmmakers. The collective also made the companion film Taking Back the Legislature (2020).
