A filmmaker meets with his friends who were imprisoned after the 2019–20 protests in Hong Kong to talk about their fragmented memories from those years. The audiovisual materials and devices they examine suggest the challenges of finding truth and resolution through documentation.
A filmmaker meets with his friends who were imprisoned after the 2019–20 protests in Hong Kong to examine memories and artefacts from those years. Their conversations about the changes since then unfold over audiovisual material from different recording devices and playback media, including surveillance and body cameras, news imagery, and footage from Wong’s vintage camcorder.
The distortions and pixellations of these images not only suggest the challenges of establishing indexical truth through documentation, but also reflect the group’s unresolved attempts to address the past through fragmented retellings and oblique humour. The film speaks to strength in the solidarity of friendship and shared experiences in the face of an unsettled past and unknowable future.
