Jacques wakes Bruno up at daybreak to deliver a life-changing revelation: nothing is real—they are living in a simulation and he has the evidence to prove it. Struck by existential vertigo, Bruno soon reaps the benefits of this discovery.
Jacques arrives at his friend Bruno’s house with the steadfast conviction that the world is a simulation. He has collected 264 observations of glitches in reality and finds his 265th when Bruno’s wife goes into labour and their daughter slips out without an umbilical cord. By the end of the strange day, an initially sceptical Bruno is fully convinced and soon finds a way to hack this new understanding of reality.
Rendered in low-poly 3D animation typically seen in old video games, the film’s aesthetic adds another layer of antirealism. In typical Dupieux fashion, Vertiginous pokes fun at existential philosophising and explores gags that live in the cracks of artifice, troubling the boundaries between physical and digital reality.

Quentin Dupieux is a prolific French filmmaker known for his absurd concepts and dark humour in works like Rubber (2010), about a homicidal car tire, and Mandibles (2020), featuring a giant fly. Several of his films have screened at SGIFF including Deerskin (2019) and Smoking Causes Coughing (2022). Vertiginous, his first animated feature, premiered at Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight.
