In central Anatolia, a woman shares her love of competitive shooting with her friends. While training begins in earnest for an upcoming competition, they face continued dismissal by the men in their community and are subject to demeaning limitations.
Halime is the only female competitive shooter in a Turkish village where the main trade is gunmaking. Inspired by her passion and achievements, her friends also begin to take an interest in shooting, but must seek their husbands’ permission to do so. When the local men’s shooting contest is cancelled, they successfully campaign to host a women’s shooting match, only to be confined to 32 metres of a shooting range instead of the usual 52 metres.
32 Meters depicts women’s continued struggle for parity in society and for their right to enjoy a life outside caregiving. It captures their joy when gathering with friends in pursuit of a hobby traditionally denied them—a simple act that proves empowering in a highly patriarchal society.
