With humour and heart, a queer filmmaker turns the camera on his family, revealing how love, identity and belonging are reshaped in contemporary Vietnam.

Long-buried tensions, unspoken identities and unresolved love have shaped filmmaker Nông Nhật Quang’s family for years. When a new chapter in his older sister Mai’s life begins, the fragile balance that has held the family together starts to shift, prompting Quang to turn the camera towards his kin.

Believing that filmmaking can open conversations where words have failed, Quang retraces his changing bond with Mai, reflects on his own journey as a gay son, and gently navigates the fraught relationship between his mother and sister. Intimate and deeply compassionate, Baby Jackfruit Baby Guava invites audiences into a Vietnamese family who are learning to give voice to years of silence.

The film assembles family photographs, diaries, phone recordings and home videos into a vibrant first-person documentary where memories collide with the present. With candid observation, sharp humour and queer exuberance, Nông embraces the camera not as a tool of objectivity but as a way of speaking to his loved ones. An emerging voice in Vietnamese queer cinema, he captures a generation negotiating greater LGBTQ+ visibility in a society where the hardest conversations still begin at home.
