Glitchy fragments shot by an obsolete digital camera overlay archival films about rural development in Thailand during the Cold War, presenting competing perspectives about national stability and regional security.
Incorporating propaganda films from the 1960s and the socialist docudrama Tongpan (1977), In Sum examines the contested Cold War histories of rural northeastern Thailand through a metafilmic lens. The poor and remote region was considered at risk for communist insurgencies in the 1960s and ’70s, and became a site of unevenly administered agricultural and infrastructure projects in the name of national security.
Archival images are overlaid with distorted footage shot by an almost inoperable digital camera, recovered from Napattaloong’s old home, that seems to voice its exhaustion. The fractured imagery questions the assumptions behind geostrategic allegiances and national narratives of moderation and stability.
