New kid on the block Julián spends the summer with his grandmother and discovers the magic of the ocean when he decides to dress up for the Coney Island Mermaid Parade.
7-year old Julián spends the summer with his no-nonsense Dominican American grandmother Carmela in New York City, where he is introduced to his Caribbean heritage and the bustling Brooklyn community. When his new friends invite him to join them at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade, Julián recruits Carmela to make him a mermaid costume. Though he eventually finds that not everyone believes in his dream to become a mermaid, Julián is determined to make waves with the help of a magical ocean spirit.
An adaptation of the award-winning picture book, Julián Is a Mermaid, the film is rendered in 2D-animation in marker and coloured pencil style with a zesty palette. With Julián, animation studio Cartoon Saloon adds yet another lovingly crafted animation to their acclaimed filmography of whimsical and meaningful stories.

Louise Bagnall
Louise Bagnall is an Irish filmmaker and animator who is a creative director at the animation production house, Cartoon Saloon. She is best known for The Breadwinner (2017), for which she was a character designer, and the Oscar-nominated short film, Late Afternoon (2019), which she wrote and directed. Julián, her feature debut, premiered at Annecy.
