Pol moves from the countryside to Manila in hopes of earning more money in the flesh industry. Amid the city’s chaos, he learns about the harsh yet alluring male prostitution business.
In Manila’s red-light district, Pol takes up work at a nightclub performing as a ‘macho dancer’ for a predominantly queer audience. Under the tutelage of seasoned performer Noel, Pol is introduced to a world of hustle and desire shaped by unwritten rules. He toes the fine line between performance and survival, soon discovering certain truths close to home.
Lino Brocka frames Manila’s underground economy through the people who pass through it—corrupt cops, needy clients and dancers. In this seedy underbelly where intimacy is commodified and the marginalised are cast aside, Brocka focuses on the warmth in camaraderie within bleak confines.

Lino Brocka was an acclaimed Filipino director known for making films critical of the social reality in his home country. Posthumously, he was honored as a National Artist for Film. His notable works include Manila in the Claws of Light (1975) and Insiang (1976), the first Filipino film to screen at Cannes. Macho Dancer premiered at Toronto while the new 4K restoration premiered at MoMA in New York this year.
