Two sisters attempt to uncover the truth of their mother’s death amid possessions and hauntings in a wig factory. Indonesian director Edwin’s foray into horror highlights the systematic exploitation of workers through grotesque means.
After Putri and Ida’s mother dies mysteriously at her workplace, the sisters replace her at the wig factory to pay off debts. As exhausted workers pull endless shifts under the watchful eyes of their boss, a slew of hair-raising supernatural encounters unfold. While deaths and possessions mount, their brother Bona, who has a special ability to regenerate body parts, becomes embroiled in the factory happenings.
Sleep No More draws strongly from ’80s Indonesian horror with its analogue visual effects and comical absurdity, and uses an oppressive spatial design to channel a deep sense of unease. The director’s first foray into horror presents an entertaining yet searing social commentary on the true demon of our times—capitalism.
