Across epochs—Republican Spain in 1932, the Civil War in 1937 and contemporary Madrid in 2017—three men navigate historical turmoil and repression, connected by love, loss and literature, in this sweeping work of queer cinema.
In Republican Spain in 1932, a young man applies for membership at a local casino and is rejected. During the Civil War in 1937, a conscripted musician looks after a wounded prisoner and builds a friendship with him. In modern-day Spain in 2017, a historian learns of his grandfather’s death and receives an unexpected inheritance.
In La Bola Negra, nearly a century of Spanish political history enfolds the lives of these young men whose desires to be seen and accepted are thwarted by society’s conservatism. Directors Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi take inspiration from Federico García Lorca’s unfinished text La bola negra and Alberto Conejero’s play La piedra oscura, mixing real-life and fictional characters in this sweeping work of queer cinema.
