Misadventures ensue as a protective single father and his three daughters—the youngest of whom is invisible—venture from their secluded life on a quiet island to Tokyo to meet the girls’ estranged grandmother, a famous actress who has taken ill.
Widower Manabu and his three daughters live an isolated life on a verdant island to protect the family’s secret: the youngest child, Hikari, was born invisible. Harbouring ambitions of filmmaking and acting careers, the spirited sisters shoot home movies inspired by their distant maternal grandmother who is famed for an iconic horror role.
The matriarch’s sudden hospitalisation in Tokyo brings the family on a road trip replete with nerve-wracking accidents, comic encounters and candid conversations—exposing the risks to Hikari’s safety as well as Manabu’s parental anxieties. The Invisibles is a heartwarming fantastical film that discusses identity and disability with sympathy for both its young protagonists and a father whose love is compounded by grief.

Born in Kanagawa, Ryo Takebayashi started out making commercials. His feature debut, Mondays: See You ‘This’ Week! (2022), won the New Director and Best Editing prizes at the Japan Film Critics Awards. He frequently collaborates with writer Natsuo Saeri, including on the viral short, Hello! Brand New World (2019), and The Invisibles, which premiered at Bucheon where it clinched the Children’s Fantastic Choice Award.
