TIGER STRIPES roars to life as Festival’s Opening film

Amanda Nell Eu’s TIGER STRIPES, which won the Grand Prix at Cannes Critics’ Week, took centre stage as the festival opening film, which was screened for the first time in Singapore. TIGER STRIPES is the epitome of a multinational co-production, and a culmination of regional attitudes and idiosyncrasies, proudly presented on the global stage.

The film revolves around the celebration of growth and womanhood. TIGER STRIPES, which previously participated in SGIFF’s Southeast Asian Film Lab in 2017, wields a wild, explosive character, unafraid to stand out in both comedy and horror. To open this year’s festival with the film is also a celebration of Amanda’s debut as a feature filmmaker, and her journey at SGIFF coming full circle.

“Amanda Nell Eu’s TIGER STRIPES stands as an emblem of the evolutionary strides within independent Southeast Asian cinema. As the esteemed opening film for this year’s Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF), it embraces and magnifies the festival’s essence—a vibrant celebration of diversity, culture, and the artistic fabric of the region. TIGER STRIPES authentically encapsulates a profound, breathtakingly raw portrayal, celebrating the spectrum of growth and womanhood. Its narrative, beautifully bold yet brutally honest, resonates as a testament to the extraordinary stories that the festival showcases, heralding Amanda Nell Eu’s remarkable achievement in delivering her first feature film” said Boo Junfeng, Chairperson, SGIFF.

SGIFF offers a rare opportunity to see some of the best films of the year, with a special focus on films from Singapore, Southeast Asia, and the wider Asian region. We have grown to be a launchpad for talent over the years, and SGIFF 2023 continues to be a stage that filmmakers can rely on to explore the limitless possibilities of film creation and its power to convey important messages to people from all walks of life.”

“As the curtains rise on the Singapore International Film Festival, kickstarting the 10th edition of the Singapore Media Festival, I would like to congratulate the team for a spectacular opening night! We commend the festival’s dedication to showcasing the vibrant tapestry of Asian storytelling, fostering cultural exchange, and honouring the creativity that defines our region’s cinematic heritage. Here’s to the festival’s success and the brilliance of Asian films that we believe will continue to captivate audiences worldwide, “ said Justin Ang, Assistant Chief Executive for Media, Innovation, Communications and Marketing, IMDA.

SGIFF Presents Exciting FORUM Talks & Panels

Staying true to its roots of collaboration, open dialogues and exchange of ideas, SGIFF will present several FORUM panels this year, allowing a space for festival-goers to engage in dynamic discussions with selected industry visionaries.

In Conversation: Fan Bingbing will spotlight Fan’s experience working across diverse cultures, the work that goes behind each of her on-screen roles, and what the future holds in the years to come.

Attendees can anticipate an engaging encounter with Singapore’s experimental film scene through the NOT HOUSED: HISTORY OF EXPERIMENTAL CINEMA IN SINGAPORE panel. This session offers a unique opportunity to interact with film practitioners, researchers, and artists, delving into fragments of Singapore’s experimental film history over recent decades. Part of the festival’s DOMAIN: NOT HOUSED pillar, this panel introduces a physical interactive archive exhibition, free for all to explore at Aliwal Arts Centre after a hiatus of four years.

The NOT HOUSED exhibition explores the enduring impact of filmic experiences, whether retained or lost in memory. This program creates an open archive utilising both physical and digital formats, providing a platform for critical discussions and the expansion of cinematic practices. Visitors can delve into the diverse facets of cultural production related to experimental films through accessible and regularly updated 3D visual archives, fostering a deeper connection to this unique form of artistic expression.

Untangle the evolving role of today’s film critics with No Such Thing As ★★★★★, where audiences are invited to engage in conversations around the impact of film criticism in shaping how films are viewed and talked about. The audience can also engage in snarky assumptions and inconvenient truths with Singapore Panorama: Mildly Offensive, Sometimes Accurate. This year, six Singapore directors making feature film comebacks or debuts come together, including Chai Yee Wei (WONDERLAND), Kelvin Tong (A YEAR OF NO SIGNIFICANCE), Anthony Chen (DRIFT), Nicole Midori Woodford (LAST SHADOW AT FIRST LIGHT), Jow Zhi Wei (TOMORROW IS A LONG TIME), and Nelson Yeo (DREAMING & DYING).

Moderated by Haresh Sharma, playwright of THE NECESSARY STAGE, attendees are encouraged to participate as the directors confront the dilemmas of a filmmaking career in Singapore in a panel that doubles as a game floor.

FORUM talks and panels will be held at Aliwal Arts Centre, Flexispace at LASALLE College of the Arts, Roselle-Simpor Ballroom at Marina Bay Sands and Oldham Theatre. In addition there will be over 40 filmmaker Q&A sessions throughout the duration of the festival, to enable the audience to gain a deeper understanding of the filmmakers and their craft.
