Caught between her separated parents in 1990s Singapore, a curious seven-year-old is left to carry big emotions she has no language for. How much children see, and how little they can do, slowly comes into focus.
Seven-year-old Swee Swee insists on being called by her Chinese name, sells contraband chewing gum to her schoolmates and loudly pines for a boy in her class in 1994 Singapore. As her parents’ marriage dissolves, she and her sister are shuttled between a mother worn down by work and a father unwilling to show up. The sisters find in each other a rare steadiness that proves children’s innate capacity for care and love—even taking on the problems of adults.
Shot at a child’s eye level, in a 4:3 frame limited in perspective yet capacious in feelings, the film gives shape to a child’s overlooked emotional landscapes. Ah Girl asks what happens when adults are not intentional about parenthood and fail to see the child in front of them.
