Taken in by a tribe of lost adolescents, a runaway girl finds a new existence amid freedom and despair. This explosive feature pulls no aesthetic punches, serving up the smouldering, sparkling ruins of youthful abandon in a mixed-media feast.
Fleeing a family of religious zealots, Jurie is taken in by a gang of lost adolescents in a Tokyo entertainment quarter. Open to anyone “with emptiness”, they prowl and hustle in streets that thrive on anonymity and addiction. Jurie quickly finds her place in the tribe, but her new life of sheer, unruly freedom soon admits desperation and darkness in equal measure.
Burn is inspired by a well-known youth subculture in Japan known as the Toyoko Kids. Plunging us into a mediascape of lo-fi footage, 3D imaging and cloying digital beats, this is a mood piece defined by relentless stimulation and aesthetic extremes. It tears up any pretence of normality, revelling in the trauma, ache and glitter that a broken world leaves behind.
