Enveloped in care and tenderness, the conversations between a Paris nursing home director and a dying Japanese playwright become a space for gradual transformation.
Marie-Lou runs a nursing home outside Paris, struggling against a system that treats care as a cost to be minimised. When she encounters Mari, a Japanese playwright who is terminally ill, the two begin a series of conversations that bridge the cultural, personal and emotional distances between them. Each exchange, marked by shared curiosity and admiration, expands to hold these differences.
All of a Sudden is built around long, unhurried dialogue, where conversations become a transformative space. As it moves between art, performance and companionship, the film explores a radical idea of care: attention, listening and presence as acts of resistance in systems that prize efficiency over genuine connection.

Ryusuke Hamaguchi is a Japanese filmmaker known for patient, dialogue-driven cinema. His recent films include Drive My Car (2021) which won the Academy Award for Best International Feature and Cannes’ Best Screenplay prize, and Evil Does Not Exist (2023) which took the Silver Lion at Venice. His first feature made outside of Japan, All of a Sudden won the joint Best Actress prize in Cannes’ main competition.
