A lonely Japanese man grieving his mother’s death follows a Filipina caregiver to Manila, discovering life and connection amid loss.

After his mother’s death, divorced salaryman Yoji moves through life on autopilot, performing routines without purpose. When he discovers his neighbour’s decomposing body, ruled a kodokushi, or lonely death, he fears the same fate. A chance encounter with Minerva, his mother’s Filipina caregiver, draws him toward an unexpected journey across borders and into the lives of others.

Diamonds in the Sand reflects on filial piety, care labour, the unseen burdens of the middle generation and those who tend to others while neglecting themselves. Through a transcultural gaze, the film observes a universal yearning for connection, revealing tenderness across distance and solitude.
