In this atmospheric magical realist drama, a Javanese woman is released after 20 years in prison and returns to her hometown. Her unwanted presence forces her to face the four seasons of her past and confront the village’s covert powers and injustice.
After serving 20 years in prison for murdering an accomplice to her rape as a 16-year-old, Pertiwi returns home to an uneasy reunion with her parents and hostility from chauvinistic male authority figures. Even as she copes with the lingering effects of trauma, the resolute Pertiwi forms solidarity with fellow outcasts, offering them shelter and community. A deaf-mute teenager whose experiences uncannily mirror her own pushes Pertiwi to seek justice.
Like her past features, Andini centres stoic female characters and continues to confront deep-rooted misogyny, violence and abuse of power. However, she now veers into fantastical elements that represent truth and power in this unflinching magical realist drama that lays bare societal ills.
