Art is born of sorrow and holds the power to heal in this devastating story on the creation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

Accompanied by the gentle whispers of the forest, Agnes and Will quickly fall in love. They build a life together in late 16th-century Stratford, England, raising their children to believe in the poetic magic of the surrounding woodland. As Will’s career in London takes off and Agnes brings up their children alone in Stratford, death sneaks in to steal away their son Hamnet. This opens up a chasm in their relationship while also becoming the emotional core of Will’s newest play.

Based on the acclaimed novel of the same name by Maggie O’Farrell, Zhao explores the moments of light and darkness wrought by a love deeply felt and a grief too crushing to bear alone.
