Eight-year-old Josephine witnesses a violent crime at the park one morning while separated from her father. As her parents shield her from the reality of what happened, she tries to make sense of the event in her own way. Based on events in the director’s life, the film portrays a child’s fractured sense of safety and loss of innocence as she copes with trauma that is left unprocessed.
The evocative cinematography and sensitive writing bring to life a child’s psyche in all its complexities, while highlighting the parents’ interiorities with their own coping mechanisms. Directed with care and restraint, Josephine is a harrowing child’s-eye study of trauma amid the challenges of parenting in a world where violence could strike anytime.

Beth de Araújo is a Brazilian-American filmmaker known for her psychological dramas. Her feature debut, Soft & Quiet (2022), premiered at SXSW and won the Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award at Gotham. This was followed by Josephine, which premiered at the Berlinale and scooped the U.S. Dramatic Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at Sundance.
