Against the backdrop of idyllic mountains and sounds of gunfire from a military camp, an architect arrives in Nagi to model for a sculpture by her ex-sister-in-law. Over eight days, both find themselves confronting unresolved loss and desires.
Yuri, a recently divorced architect from Tokyo, visits her former sister-in-law, Yoriko, a sculptor who now lives in the idyllic town of Nagi. Besides modelling for Yoriko’s latest work, Yuri spends time with two teenage boys who take art lessons from Yoriko. Over eight tranquil days, the inner lives of the four characters gently reveal themselves as their friendships with each other evolve amid burgeoning desires and the haunting of past romantic longings.
Koji Fukada’s quiet drama favours hushed restraint over confrontation; in masterful juxtaposition, distant gunfire from a military base needles at the town’s pastoral calm. Nagi Notes draws its power from the unsaid, centring the ambiguity that lives in every human interaction.

Japanese filmmaker Koji Fukada made his directorial debut with The Chair (2002). He is best known for his slow-paced analysis of relationships in films. His features include Au Revoir L’Ete (2013), A Girl Missing (2019), which premiered at Locarno, Love Life (2022) and Love on Trial (2025). His 2016 feature, Harmonium, won the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize at Cannes and competed at SGIFF. Nagi Notes premiered in the main competition of Cannes.
