Experimental filmmaker Sang-hee, accompanied by her brother, visits her mother on Jeju Island after a decade’s absence. She meets her documentarian stepfather and her younger, aspiring artist stepsister for the first time. Marked by awkward niceties and blink-and-you’ll-miss microexpressions, the tension in the mother–daughter reunion remains oblique. Family conversations flit naturally between artmaking, beauty, and even the notion of eternity.
Slim yet profound, this is a particularly ruminative work in Hong’s prolific oeuvre. While it glides across surfaces and impressions to reveal hidden interiorities as his films tend to do, the revelation here seems to hit harder: eternities lasting mere moments, waiting quietly to be laid eyes on, and felt.

South Korean auteur Hong Sang-soo is known for films that explore the dilemmas of human relationships and artmaking. His notable works include Right Now, Wrong Then (2015), The Woman Who Ran (2020) and The Novelist’s Film (2022), many of which clinched top prizes at major international festivals and screened at SGIFF. Nowhere to Lay My Eyes, his 35th feature, won the Ecumenical Jury Prize, Best Direction and Best Performance at Locarno.
