Eleven-year-old Bruno celebrates his birthday with an exuberant drag party with family and friends. But two momentous events puncture the merriment: Bruno realises he has a crush on his best friend, and his father is diagnosed with HIV. As Bruno grapples with his queer identity amid the moral panic of the 1990s AIDS epidemic, the impending familial tragedy weighs heavily. Despite the crushing news, his family tries to maintain a buoyant mood—but how long can that last?
Loosely based on the director’s life, this affecting docufiction dramatises his emotional memory of a turning point in his childhood while present-day interviews add another layer of subjectivity. The nostalgic 16mm cinematography filled with candy-coloured hues brings to life a coming-of-age story that brims with tenderness.

Bruno Santamaría Razo is a Mexican director and cinematographer whose work explores memory, secrets and childhood. His directorial debut, the award-winning documentary Cosas que no hacemos (2020), travelled widely to international festivals. Six Months in a Pink and Blue Building, his first fiction feature, premiered at Cannes’ Critics’ Week.
