A young graphic artist returns home to care for her mother who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. In the process, she finds grief, comedy and first love tangled together in a household relearning how to love a person they thought they knew.
Sarah puts her exciting life as an activist and artist in 90s San Francisco on hold and returns to her small, conservative hometown after her mother’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis. While her father struggles with his own grief, Sarah’s caregiving duty affects every part of her life, including her romantic relationship. Despite the heartrending effects of Alzheimer’s, the film imbues her mother with a personality beyond the disease: feisty, funny, with flashes of her old self.
Tangles adapts Sarah Leavitt’s memoir for the screen without sanding down its unique traits as a graphic novel. Hand-drawn, black-and-white animation reimagines the source visual language, using sound design and movement to give the story a life distinctly its own, staying faithful to both mediums.

Leah Nelson is a Canadian director who studied film at Emily Carr University before cofounding Giant Ant, an Emmy-winning Vancouver animation studio, and later Kiddo Films. Known for her emotionally driven commercial and animation work, her feature debut is an adaptation from Sarah Leavitt’s autobiographical graphic memoir. Tangles premiered at Cannes.
