As the moon threatens to ‘eclipse’ animals and people around her, 12-year-old Bego meets REN__, an online friend who teaches her how to ‘shift’ into her desired reality.
During a seemingly endless summer break, 12-year-old Bego reckons with an approaching solar eclipse and struggles to fit in at home and with other girls. Her only solace is REN__, an online friend who teaches her how to ‘shift’ into her desired reality through lucid dreaming. As the moon threatens to ‘eclipse’ the animals and people around her, drawing them into a supernatural trance, Bego turns to ‘shifting’ in order to escape her melancholia and fears.
With its languid fades, shadows and lo-fi artifacting, The Days Off is a love letter to a bygone internet that sheltered misfits and dreamers. It curdles nostalgia with an otherworldly uncanniness that takes us deep into its meditation on the desires inherent in escapism.

Argentinian filmmaker Lucila Mariani is an alumna of the 2023 Locarno Filmmakers Academy. Her short films include Wekwaindu (2018), Resonancias (2019) and Luna que se quiebra sobre la tiniebla de mi soledad (2022), which premiered at BFI’s Future Film Festival, Rotterdam and Locarno respectively. The Days Off, her feature debut, garnered a Special Mention at Locarno’s Cineasti del Presente Competition.
