In 1982, an eleven-year-old girl in Chile comes of age with her loving queer family, who are accused of spreading a strange disease.
Lidia lives with a queer family providing entertainment at a canteen for the nearby mining town. When her family are accused of transmitting a mysterious but deadly plague with their gazes, the frightened workers ostracise them and attempt extreme measures.
The film explores the transgressions between binaries of virtue and sin, queer and normality, desires and guilt. Through sharp humour, irony and subversions, it celebrates our humanity and critiques the marginalisation of someone as an other. A metaphor for the ’80s AIDS crisis, this modern western witnesses Lidia’s perilous quest for vengeance and healing, where family is her only refuge and love might be the real danger.
