Zoom In, Zoom Out

A game designer searches for his missing roommate through chat logs, avatars and secondhand memory, only to discover that digital remains reveal little of another person.

Shi, a video game designer, searches for his missing roommate Gao, and his only clues lie inside a game Gao used to play. The trail leads Shi to YY, Gao’s former love interest, and the two sort through his digital remains: saved conversations, a character still active somewhere, and scattered memories.

Zoom In, Zoom Out is a formal exercise in the possibilities that emerge when film and game languages bleed into each other. It asks how we can hold onto a loved one when they exist mostly as digital fragments, chat logs, avatars, and whether reassembling them counts as memory or something closer to invention. Zooming in and out, as a way of looking in the film, reveals each time the limitations of seeing others and ourselves.
