Shape of Momo

When a young woman leaves Delhi and returns to her Himalayan hometown, she grapples with its increasingly suffocating expectations.

After quitting her job in Delhi, university-educated Bishnu returns to her Sikkimese home village only to confront mounting family anxieties, the pressure to find a suitable husband, as well as the ways in which her expectations of life clash with those of her family and community. Drawing from personal experience, Tribeny Rai crafts a nuanced, multi-generational portrait of women shaped by inherited expectations that often become constraints.

Shape of Momo offers an unflinching look at a young woman’s struggle for autonomy in a patriarchal rural environment. Rai’s restrained, observational style echoes Jia Zhangke, using cinema as a vessel to preserve voices too often silenced by beauty or nostalgia.
