Fren’s job is to find perfect human resources. Now pregnant, she must decide whether to create one of her own.
Fren, pressured to find a new secretary for her temperamental boss, interviews a stream of new hires as an HR officer. After discovering that she’s pregnant, she now bears a conflicting burden: the professional stress of recruiting the best human resources and her ambivalence about her own body becoming a producer of human resources. Fren’s anxieties, including worries about societal and environmental collapse, are mirrored through a wealth of sensory details – muted colours, the droning of air conditioners, podcasts and news fragments. By portraying a woman trapped in a world of relentless self-improvement, Human Resource raises bigger questions about existence, mortality and happiness.
