Moonlight Cinema, A Free Public Cinema Series by the Singapore International Film Festival Screens on 20 and 22 August 2021

Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF) will host its fourth edition of Moonlight Cinema in partnership with Gardens by the Bay, over two days in August, where audiences can enjoy free film screenings that spotlight the whimsical and magical side of Singapore.

Running on 20 and 22 August 2021, this will be the first-ever edition of Moonlight Cinema organised outside of the Festival period. The programme celebrates storytelling through film, and is part of SGIFF’s efforts to foster deeper film appreciation in Singapore. The initiative is a platform to encourage local audiences to expand their horizon to different types of cinema and illustrates SGIFF’s commitment to produce inclusive programmes to connect communities and audiences of all ages through the magic of cinema.

The Moonlight Cinema series this year includes a slate of notable Singapore films by directors Royston Tan, Tan Pin Pin and Ng Xi Jie. Film-lovers can look forward to musical drama 3688 by acclaimed director Royston Tan which centres on a parking attendant named Fei Fei who dreams of a musical career, Singapore GaGa by award-winning filmmaker Tan Pin Pin that features vignettes of Singapore life as well as its everyday sounds and sights, and Singapore Minstrel by Ng Xi Jie, that takes viewers into the mind of Singapore’s wildest busker, Roy Payamal.

3688 (PG)

Directed by Royston Tan, Singapore, 2015, 99 min
Friday 20 August 2021, 7.30pm | Flower Field Hall @ Gardens by the Bay | Free

3688 centres on a parking attendant named Fei Fei who has always dreamt of becoming a singer like her famous idol and namesake – the legendary Taiwanese singer Fong Fei Fei.

Singapore GaGa (PG)

Directed by Tan Pin Pin, Singapore, 2005, 54 min
Sunday 22 August 2021, 5pm | Flower Field Hall @ Gardens by the Bay | Free

Singapore GaGa is a paean to the quirkiness of the Singaporean aural landscape. It reveals Singapore’s past and present with a delight and humour that makes it a necessary film for all Singaporeans. We hear buskers, street vendors, school cheerleaders sing hymns to themselves and to their communities. From these vocabularies (including Arabic, Latin, Hainanese), a sense of what it might mean to be a modern Singaporean emerges.

Singapore Minstrel (PG)

Directed by Ng Xi Jie, Singapore, 2015, 91 min
Sunday 22 August 2021, 7.30pm | Flower Field Hall @ Gardens by the Bay | Free

Roy Payamal is the wildest busker of a country ranked the world’s most emotionless society. He takes his undermined line of work as a serious art – but is his faith impossible idealism or an admirable conviction? Singapore Minstrel is an invitation into his beautiful mind, a magical, trying universe where art and life dialogue in a tropical dream.

Founded in 1987, the Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF) is the largest and longest-running film event in Singapore. It has become an iconic event in the local arts calendar that is widely attended by international film critics; and known for its dynamic programming and focus on ground-breaking Asian cinema for Singapore and the region. Committed to nurturing and championing local and regional talent, its competition component, the Silver Screen Awards, brings together emerging filmmakers from Asia and Southeast Asia while paying tribute to acclaimed cinema legends.

With its mentorship programmes, masterclasses and dialogues with attending filmmakers, the Festival also serves as a catalyst for igniting public interest, artistic dialogue, and culture exchanges in the art of filming. The SGIFF is organized by the Singapore International Film Festival Ltd, a non-profit organization with Institution of a Public Character (IPC) status.

The 32nd edition of SGIFF will return from 25 Nov – 5 Dec 2021.
