While digitising an unknown creature’s remains, a palaeontologist grieves for a cherished loved one.
A group of palaeontologists investigate the fossilised remains of an unknown being using CT scans. The digitised remains conjure uncanny afterimages left behind by previous users of the machine, thus forming an amalgamated image out of the transfigured fragments of organic and digital artefacts. Upon discovering her mother’s illness, a researcher meditates on one’s relationship with the photographic memory and the yearning for co-presence.
Juxtaposing scanned medical images, eroded seabed sediments, and the ghostly apparitions of an unidentified creature, the film comments on the ethics of preservation and the transient nature of matter, bearing testament to our desire for kinship to those who have come before.
