Composed of collages created with paper, paint and photographs, this trailer for a never-to-be-made feature is Godard’s final film.
Jean-Luc Godard was one of cinema’s most innovative provocateurs. Near the end of his life in 2022, he was preparing a feature based on Faux Passeports, Charles Plisnier’s 1937 novel about underground activities of leftist agitators in the interwar period. He created a book of collages as an outline using paint, ink, correction fluid, glue and photographs, and gave his editor and screenwriters precise instructions on how to sequence, time and soundtrack them.
The resulting trailer for a never-to-be-made film now stands as Godard’s final work. The marks made by his hand, images and audio from his previous films, music, his voice and even silence come together in a powerful, melancholic evocation of a lifetime of artistry.
This film will be screened together with Undefined Things.
