Undefined Things

María APARICIO Argentina 2023 81 min PG13 (Brief Coarse Language)

A warm, elegiac documentary depicting the rigour and creativity of a film editor’s craft, and the presence of cinema in her life.

Veteran film editor Eva works on an uncompleted documentary about blind people after the filmmaker, her friend Juan, suddenly passes away. As she talks through the process with her assistant Rami, we observe the philosophical and technical rigour of her craft, and how precise decisions about the selection and juxtaposition of material transform story, meaning and emotion.

Characters from her editing projects start to enter her dreams, becoming another narrative strand in addition to the films she edits, which are in turn nested within Aparicio’s film. This elegant, elegiac work considers the losses that arise from the passage of time and generational change, as well as the richness of cinema and its creative friendships.

This film will be screened together with Trailer of the Film That Will Never Exist: “Phony Wars”.
